Anchal is a non-profit organization, started by two sisters based in Louisville, Kentucky. Their story begins with a work related trip to India that changed everything. When one sister saw the other side of the fashion industry she worked in, she knew that her path was about to change. She started Anchal, partnering with women in Northern India and Louisville, Kentucky who had been exploited to create handcrafted fashion accessories and home goods. Her sister soon joined the cause, and in 2010 Anchal officially became a non-profit.
Their work is a collaboration of modern design and patterns with traditional techniques, true to the makers. Anchal works with their employees throughout their artisan journey. They offer training, safe employment, access to the western market, health care, and access to schooling and support to their artisans and families.
Anchal’s first product was the quilt. At the beginning, when our artisan’s skills were in their infancy, making quilts was a simple way for them to begin earning money without years of expertise.
Quilts, like our namesake, represent warmth and comfort. They are usable, functional and flexible. To this day the inspiration for every collection starts with the quilt and it remains the bedrock of our business.
