Making beautiful toys. Creating dignified employment.
Hathay Bunano aims to provide employment which fits in with the rhythm of rural life, stems the tide of economic migration to the cities and keeps families together. Hathay Bunano, meaning hand made or hand knitted in Bangla, is a non-profit fair trade organization in Bangladesh. Their mission is to create fairly paid, good quality, local employment for rural women who are poor and often disadvantaged.
Bright and quirky, with an incredible story behind them, Pebble's toys are crocheted and knitted entirely by hand. These products are not only bringing joy to little ones around the world, they are bringing opportunity to thousands of disadvantaged young women in Bangladesh. In these societies, marginalized women, such as the illiterate or those affected by disability are often viewed as "un-marriageable" and become outcasts from their family and community. This employment gives them a valuable place within society.
